Buying guide

Buying miniature cattle: what to know first

Miniature cattle are full-blooded cattle bred down in size over generations, not a separate species. They eat roughly a third of what a standard cow eats, are easier to handle, and put less wear on small pastures. That makes them a popular choice for hobby farms, homesteads and families who want a gentle, low-maintenance companion animal.

Choosing the right breed

If you want the classic fluffy look, start with the Highland family. Micro mini and miniature Highlands are the smallest and friendliest; midsize and standard Highlands suit larger properties. For a family milk cow, the miniature Jersey is hard to beat. Dexters and mini Herefords are dual-purpose and very hardy. Mini Zebus are naturally small, heat-tolerant and the most affordable way to start.

How much do mini cattle cost?

Price depends on breed, size, color and sex. Our pet steers start at $800 for a miniature Zebu and $3,000 for a miniature Highland. Rare Highland colors such as dun and brindle, and verified micro minis under 36 inches, sit at the top of the range. Registered breeding heifers are priced individually.

Space, shelter and feed

Plan for half an acre to one acre of good pasture per animal, a three-sided shelter, clean water and a mineral lick. In winter, grass hay covers most of their diet. Cattle are herd animals, so we always recommend buying two or pairing your calf with another animal.

What comes with every calf

  • Veterinary health certificate and age-appropriate vaccinations
  • Halter started and handled daily from birth
  • Registration papers where the breed association allows
  • A written care guide and ongoing owner support

FAQ

Mini cattle questions, answered

How much do mini cattle cost?

Our pet steers start at $800 for a miniature Zebu, $1,500 for mini Angus and Brahman, and $3,000 for a miniature Highland. Micro mini Highlands start at $6,500. Starting prices are for pet/companion animals (steers and wethers); breeding heifers are quoted on request.

What is the smallest breed of mini cattle?

The micro mini Highland, which matures under 36 inches at the hip, is the smallest we offer. The miniature Zebu is the smallest naturally occurring breed and usually stays under 42 inches.

How much land does a mini cow need?

Plan for half an acre to one acre of good pasture per animal, plus a simple three-sided shelter, fresh water and a mineral lick. Micro minis need the least space.

Are mini cattle good pets?

Yes. Steers raised by hand are calm, affectionate and easy to lead on a halter. They are herd animals, so we recommend keeping at least two or pairing them with goats, sheep or another companion.

What is the difference between miniature, midsize and standard Highland cattle?

It comes down to height at the hip as an adult: micro minis are under 36 inches, miniatures 36 to 42 inches, midsize 42 to 48 inches and standard Highlands 48 inches and up.

Can I buy a breeding heifer?

Yes. Breeding heifers are priced individually based on genetics, color, size and registration. Contact us with the breed you want and we will send current availability and a quote.

Do you deliver mini cattle?

We arrange climate-controlled livestock transport across the continental USA and certified export shipping to Australia. Delivery is quoted per trip based on distance.
